Let's kick off the New Year right with something I usually do in private, but I've seen a lot of bloggers post their monthly goals and it'll most likely make me more accountable when I recap what I accomplished next month. My year kind of petered out around November and it wasn't all that great before then, what with all the mental health issues, physical health stuff, , and losing my piggies. Needless to say, I haven't really been all that motivated to do all the many things I usually put on my plate. I'm hoping that this year treats us all better and we accomplish all we want. What better time to start than now?
1. Publish at least two blog posts a week.
I have a lot of ideas and outlines going, so this shouldn't be a problem. I miss blogging regularly and I plan on doing all kinds of things and covering all types of topics to get a feel for what people want to read. :)
2. Read a book.
I haven't actually finished a book since, like...June??? I don't even remember. Of course I have finished a TON with my work as an editor, but it's not exactly the same as sitting down and enjoying some fiction without having to edit it. I want to get back into reading because I miss it a lot, obviously. I have started over a dozen books and just never get around to finishing them. So hopefully I can find one that I can't put down. Any suggestions are welcome!
3. Wake up earlier.
Since November, I've been sleeping in later and later just so I don't have to deal with the world. A lot of times I end up sleeping during the day as well because I don't sleep at night and I'm constantly tired. I just want more of a routine. Nothing crazy.
4. Go to the eye doctor.
I think I will slowly go blind if I don't get on this soon.
5. Find an apartment with the gang.
Me, Al, and two of our friends are planning on moving by the end of the month and sharing an apartment for about a year while me and Al look for a house. I'm most excited about this because I have been ready to be on my own for what seems like centuries.
6. Finish writing Super Secret Sci-fi Project.
My original plan was to finish it in December, but that was one massive fail. I don't have much left of it to make a complete rough draft, so I'm aiming for the first few weeks of January to have this crossed off my list.
7. Move up in weights at the gym.
My muscles are so unbelievably weak since I started working from home. Turns out, lifting fish tanks and 50 pound bags of dog food did more for my body than I thought. I've been going to the gym about twice a week and I always end my workout with weights that are so light it's laughable.
8. Submit at least one short story or poem to a journal/anthology.
Some of you may know I've been sitting on this book of poems for a while and working on illustrations for it (which I want to make available in some capacity. I just haven't decided how). I want to try submitting at least one somewhere and mayyyybe work on a short story if there is an anthology that has open submissions that speak to me. I suck at writing short things and I really want to get better at it.
9. Reach 200 members in Nikki Rae Fans.
We are currently at 170. I think it's doable, but I'm not sure if it's something I can really control.
10. Start meditating again.
Along with my mental health went my meditation practice. I was doing it every day before I started work and it really helped me stay calm throughout the day.
11. Film/vlog more.
I completely failed at filming every day of NaNoWriMo and Vllogmas. Maybe it was too big of an undertaking to take on all at once. However, I would love to make more videos and vlog my life more, so this shouldn't be too hard to do.
12. Throw out useless shit taking up space.
I am moving by next month. I have too much stuff that is literally just collecting dust or stuffed in a closet. I would love to just get rid of it all so I can start off new in the new place.
13. Save around $500.
This is usually my goal every month, but the past few months have had things come up that made it impossible. Hopefully I can start back up again and get that house fund going.
14. Do taxes.
Pretty self explanatory. I hate doing them but this is what adults do.
15. Go to Divergently launch (and maybe read).
I have two whole stories in an anthology students from my college put together and it's been two years in the making. I've been invited to the launch this month and they are also looking for readers. I hate reading out loud so I'll have to gauge my anxiety levels closer to the deadline for signups, but I would love to if I'm in the right frame of mind.
16. Print copies of The Snake Den.
I flat out gave up on trying to fix the print cover so CreateSpace would print this damn book. I just got too frustrated and had to walk away. I think enough time has passed so I won't want to throw my laptop into a river, but we shall see.
17. Start a loose outline of the next Shadow & Ink Series book.
I want to get back into a release schedule this year and this is one of the first books on my list.
18. Start journaling again.
I've been mostly using my journal as one huge to do list and while it helps my brain stay organized, it's not what I'm keeping a journal for. I want to start recording things and writing down junk and doodling again.
19. Spend more time with my sisters/family.
With my twin moving back to town and things slowing down for my little sister in the winter, this shouldn't be too hard to accomplish. I would also really like to see my aunt and uncle more, as we only really get together on holidays.
20. Make a new planner
It's no secret that I love planning and I'm so particular about it that I usually make my own in some way. I really want a yellow one this time around. :)
Since this is January, the month where things are magically more motivating and awesome, I'm going to include some of my goals for the year as well. I never make resolutions, but I do make goals and I like to look back at the end of the year at what I've actually done.
1. Take care of my health in general.
This may seem simple, but I have SUCH a hard time doing this. I've already started now that I have insurance (fixing my teeth and all the cavities years of neglect have created for one), but I really want to focus on everything. I want to eat healthier, work out even more consistently, remember to take my freaking pills, find a therapist, and look into getting a therapy animal as well.
2. Buy a house...or at least think about it.
Al and I have been talking about this forever. First we want to get an apartment and see where we want to live and then go from there. We aren't sure when we'll get a house, but I definitely want to make steps in that direction. It has literally been my biggest dream since I was a little kid to have a house.
3. Cook more.
Seriously. We spend so much money on going out to eat and it's not the healthiest thing in the world either. I like making things and knowing exactly what's going into it, I'm just not the greatest at it.
4. Write the Dark Contemporary Romance.
I have SO MANY dark and twisted ideas for this one and it's probably the most "adult" book I've ever attempted to write. I really want to write it and get it out all this year, but my ideas filter in and out with books so I don't want to put myself on a timeframe for it. A rough draft is good enough for me.
5. Put out at least 3 books.
2016 was the year I more or less took an unwanted break from writing. I was transitioning on and off meds, I was depressed, I lost my piggies, I was dealing with a whole slew of junk with selling my dad's house, and so on. I was also feeling a bit burnt out with writing so much and pushing books out just so I would have 5 books a year or something crazy like that. I want to set a goal of at least 3, but I'm not going to post a release schedule until everything is all lined up.
6. Get an agent...or at least start looking for one.
This will be after I finish the Super Secret Sci-Fi Project. I want this one for traditional publishing because I really think it could sell to a mass traditional market, so we'll see what happens. I at least want to query and get back into that whole process.
7. Blog twice a week.
Right now, I want to do once a week, but I have a lot of stuff lined up for blog posts and I want to eventually have one post on Tuesdays and one post on Fridays.
8. Be neater.
You might never guess by looking at all the planning I do that I am sloppy as hell. For real. I will make tea and forget it's there for WEEKS. Like, I disgust myself a lot of the time. I really want to have less stuff, clean more, and just not create a mess everywhere I dwell like some kind of troll.
9. Put tea in my online store.
I've given away some tea in the past, mostly sleepy time and home made chai-cinnamon, and everyone who has received them gave me great feedback. I want to make tea for my books/characters and have it available to readers. :)
10. See friends more.
I'm not so good with the social thing. People in general drain me and I'm always tired after hanging out with people, no matter how much I love them and want to see them. I'm really going to try this year to be more proactive in making new friends and connecting with the ones I have more often.
11. Travel somewhere.
In January, Al and I are going to Pittsburgh for the Angels and Sirens book signing, but other than that, we have no real travel plans. I would love to go camping in the fall in West Virginia or just go somewhere to visit friends we haven't seen in a while. Money's going to be tight so nothing crazy, but going somewhere cheap is still traveling to me.
12. Not feel guilty about taking time off or relaxing.
I have a really, really hard time just being still. I can't just sit and watch a movie or sit and relax. I always have my phone, answering emails and talking to clients or whatever. I want to make it more of a routine to turn off my work/writing brain and just be calm and relax more.
13.Start promoting my books again and trying to get reviews.
I haven't done this in months. Sometimes it can feel like shouting into the void, but I've definitely noticed a decline in sales since I stopped promoting and asking for reviews, so I would like to get back into the routine.
14. Get 100 Metamorphosis clients.
Every year I get around 100 clients, so this shouldn't be too difficult--especially with 7-10 clients a month. I really love editing and helping my fellow writer. I'm so grateful I get to call this my job and it also helps make my writing amazing without me really having to think about it.
15. Sketch more.
I miss drawing, even if it's only doodling in my journal. It can be relaxing when I don't try to make things perfect and just create. It also helps me clear my head in a way so I can get other things done--like a mental warm up.
There are probably a ton more I will add to this list, but these are the main ones that I came up with. What are your goals for the month/year? Any resolutions you'd like to share?
